Project
UDENFOR (Project OUTSIDE) combines outreach work with research
in homelessness and exclusion Project UDENFOR is a NGO
established in 1997 and registered as a fund in 1999 The
project is financed by both private and public funds
The
purpose of Projekt UDENFOR is to improve conditions for
society's outcasts. People who are not reached in other ways
and who live in the absolute margins of society.
They are the bag-people who live deeply isolated though
visible to everybody in the cities. And they are other people
who for various reasons live in the streets. Some are mentally
ill, some are addicts, some are both, some are none of these.
Many suffer from physical health disorders. They are men and
women, young and old.
Projekt UDENFOR is based on the belief that even the most
isolated people do want contact and help. And our efforts
should begin where they are - in the street.
Our method of work is experimental, open and multifaceted. Our
core concern, and the work which forms the starting point for
the analytical side of the project, is the provision of
practical support for the homeless people.
Our task is to improve conditions for the individual person,
and in the same time improving conditions for the homeless and
the socially excluded in general. Parallel with providing
practical help we also compile, process and spread knowledge.
We strive to keep the debate alive by giving inspiration,
being provocative and pointing to new approaches.
In the
course of the first five years we have:

Established and evaluated the Bag People Project, a
three-year socio-psychiatric and methodology developing
project.

Started Nursing on wheels, a programme dedicated to
providing active nursing to people on the street.

Implemented a European conference called Mental Health -
Social Exclusion, about homeless mentally ill.

Undertaken a variety of consultancy assignments

Performed research focused on user-involvement in work with
non-hospitalised mentally ill people.

Supplied teaching and presentations.

Contributed intensively and extensively to the public
debate.
